webinar:

Defending Our PV Systems From Cyberattacks

With more utilities requiring remote grid support features, Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) such as solar PV systems are more vulnerable than ever to cyberattacks. It is important for the solar industry to address this vulnerability prior to mandating nationwide site connectivity. As solar becomes a larger portion of the US energy mix, this weakness may play a key issue in national security if not addressed.

Currently available cybersecurity protocols work well for centralized energy production; however they prove too processor intensive and costly for typical DER systems. Yaskawa Solectria Solar has teamed up with NREL and Sandia in their Department of Energy funded Module-OT project to help develop and test a more adequately paired cybersecurity solution for DERs.

Key goals of this webinar will be to:

  • Learn about different types of cyberattacks and the history of cyberattacks on energy resources
  • Discuss the research being done by NREL, Sandia and Yaskawa Solectria Solar
  • Understand what designers can do to ensure that their data and system controls do not fall into the wrong hands.
