Scott Clavenna

CEO & Co-Founder

Scott Clavenna has been leading high-tech market research firms for over 15 years. In his capacity as a trusted analyst and consultant, Scott has helped dozens of companies enter and succeed in complex and intensely competitive markets worldwide. He also has authored more than 30 reports that helped define important emerging market segments in optical and broadband communications.

Prior to founding Greentech Media, Scott was chief analyst at Heavy Reading, the market research arm of Light Reading, the dominant online media company in the telecommunications market. CMP bought Light Reading in 2005. Before creating Heavy Reading, Scott founded PointEast Research, providing strategic consulting and market intelligence to a broad mix of startups, venture capitalists and major suppliers in the communications/IT industry, and worked as director of research for Light Reading. In 1997, Scott co-founded Pioneer Consulting, which quickly grew into the leading market research firm covering the optical and broadband communications industry.

Rick Thompson

President & Co-Founder

Rick Thompson co-­founded Greentech Media in 2007, leading the company from unknown upstart to the authoritative information services provider covering the transformation of the global electricity system.

Prior to GTM, Thompson spent 15 years at leading technology start­ups, incumbent networking and telecommunications companies, and technology media and market research firms. Rick was senior telecom analyst at Light Reading/Heavy Reading, the dominant online media & research firm in the telecommunications market, acquired by CMP Media in 2005. Mr. Thompson previously served as the vice president of marketing at PanGo Networks, a wireless software startup, and as director of product management and marketing at Sycamore Networks Inc., where he defined the product strategy and launch of the industry’s first intelligent optical switching platform through their IPO in 1999. Under his leadership, Sycamore deployed several of the world’s largest intelligent optical network infrastructures. Prior to joining Sycamore, Rick held product management positions with Packet Engines, a pioneer of Gigabit Ethernet switching that was later acquired by Alcatel; and FORE Systems, a leader in ATM networking that was later acquired by Marconi and, subsequently, Ericsson. Mr. Thompson earned a bachelor of science degree in industrial engineering from the University of Pittsburgh.

Shayle Kann

Senior Vice President, GTM Research

Shayle Kann is the Senior Vice President of Research for Greentech Media. He has spoken in conferences around the world and been cited in publications such as The Economist, New York Times, Wall St. Journal, Washington Post, Forbes, Bloomberg, Reuters, Financial Times, and more. He has also testified in front of the U.S. House of Representatives Natural Resources Committee on the state and future of the U.S. solar market. Mr. Kann joined GTM Research upon returning from Australia, where he was a U.S. Fulbright Scholar studying renewable energy project finance during the credit crisis.

Prior to this, Mr. Kann worked in the Clean Energy Markets division of Conservation Services Group, focusing on voluntary and compliance markets for renewable energy certificates. He has a Bachelor’s cum laude, phi beta kappa from Pomona College. Mr. Kann also co-hosts our weekly podcast,The Interchange, exclusively on GTM Squared.

Eric Wesoff


Eric Wesoff is the Editor-in-Chief at Greentech Media. Prior to joining GTM, Eric Wesoff founded Sage Marketing Partners in 2000 to provide sales and marketing-consulting services to venture-capital firms and their portfolio companies in the alternative energy and telecommunications sectors. Mr. Wesoff has become a well-known, respected authority and speaker in these fields. 

His expertise covers solar power, fuel cells, biofuels and advanced batteries. His strengths are in market research and analysis, business development and due diligence for investors. He frequently consults for energy startups and Silicon Valley's premier venture capitalists.

Stephen Lacey

Managing Editor

Stephen Lacey is the Managing Editor at Greentech Media, where he focuses on solar, storage, efficiency and grid modernization. He has extensive experience reporting on the business and politics of cleantech. He is also the host of the Energy Gang, a popular podcast that that dives into the technological, political, and market forces driving energy and environmental issues. He is based in Boston, MA.

Carrie Whitmore

Director, Online & Event Sales

Carrie is a Director of Online & Event Sales at Greentech Media, where she focuses primarily on branding, market education and thought leadership programs for the renewable energy industry.  She has 16 years of sales experience serving marketing professionals across high-tech and clean energy. She received her B.A. in Psychology from Colby-Sawyer College.

Justin Freedman

Director, Solar Research Sales

Justin has served as the Director of Research Sales since 2011, and brings 12 years of sales leadership to the GTM team.  Prior to joining GTM, he worked at Forrester Research and thus has a deep understanding of how to engage market research and data to help clients achieve a broad range of strategic initiatives. At GTM, Justin leads a team focused on ensuring the ongoing success of its customers while continuing to grow the overall business. Outside of work, Justin is an avid boater, fisherman, and enjoys the spending time outdoors with his wife and dog.

Tate Ishimuro

Director, Grid Edge Research Sales

Tate Ishimuro is the director of Grid Edge research sales, including Grid Edge Executive Council membership and energy storage products, at GTM Research. Tate joined GTM in 2009 as a member of the solar research sales team and was instrumental in building relationships with the solar industry and establishing that as an anchor business line for GTM.

In 2013, Tate was appointed to lead the sales effort for GTM’s grid research practice. Since then he has helped conceive of and grow the Grid Edge Executive Council to over 90 member organizations and 190 industry executives that are leading the way in defining the next-generation electricity system. He has attracted some of the largest energy utilities and technology companies in the world, including Duke Energy, Exelon, GE, PG&E, National Grid, EDF and many more. Prior to joining GTM, Tate attended Barry University and worked for a real estate development company in the San Francisco Bay Area.

MJ Shiao

Director, Solar Research

MJ Shiao leads GTM Research's solar research program, directing GTM's coverage of the end-to-end solar value chain and its disruptive role in the global energy industry. His responsibilities include strategy, product management, operations and talent development for GTM's solar market intelligence division. A 9-year veteran of the solar industry, MJ has experience ranging from fabrication of crystalline silicon solar cells to PV project development. Before joining GTM Research, MJ managed the construction of several megawatts of residential and commercial PV projects with Solar Design Associates. His past experience also includes market research at the Solar Electric Power Association (SEPA) and the U.S. National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). MJ holds a bachelor's in electrical engineering from the University of Delaware, where he was named a National Truman Scholar. A believer in the social benefits of solar power, MJ has researched, installed and tested rural off-grid PV in India and Thailand and formerly served on the Steering Committee of SustainUS, a non-profit engaging U.S. youth in sustainable development advocacy.

Ben Kellison

Director, Grid Research

Ben is the Director of Grid Research for GTM Research, specializing in Distribution Automation, Network Management and Renewables Integration markets. He previously worked as a research analyst for Knwldg Houston, formerly a green energy and healthcare consulting firm, where his research focused on AMI deployment and smart grid regulatory policy. Prior to Knwldg Houston, Ben was a policy intern with Wexler and Walker Public Policy Associates where he performed research for energy, transportation, and defense clients.

He has authored multiple studies on the smart grid market, concentrating on policy evolution, technology innovation, the market's competitive landscape and project economics. Ben has delivered keynote presentations for multiple industry conferences, moderated and participated in panels covering a variety of topics, and regularly hosts industry webinars with GTM Research / Greentech Media. Ben has been a smart grid contributor on CNN Money, NPR, and the Texas Tribune. He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a bachelor’s degree in economics and political science.

Steve Propper

Director, Grid Edge

Steve manages GTM Research's Grid Edge program, which includes chairing the annual Grid Edge Live conference, overseeing the Grid Edge Executive Council and developing research related to the changing regulatory and business models associated with the energy system of the future. Before GTM, Steve was a Manager at Ernst Young counseling power and utility companies on business planning, customer engagement and operational improvement initiatives. Prior to that, Steve spent multiple years at PG&E in a variety of customer engagement and program management roles ranging from the Smart Grid deployment to energy efficiency and demand side management initiatives. Steve holds an MBA from INSEAD and a B.A. in Economics from The George Washington University.

Jaci Chase

Director, Events

Jacqueline is the Director of GTM Events. She is a marketing and event operations professional responsible for the planning and execution of GTM’s industry-leading conferences as well as the company’s event services business.

She has nearly a decade of experience in the field, having come to GTM in 2011 from Noering Productions where she held positions in corporate event planning and administration. Jacqueline attended the University of Notre Dame, graduating with a B.S. in Environmental Science. She is based in GTM’s Boston headquarters, located just north of her hometown of Cohasset, Massachusetts.
