South Australia’s Power Crisis: Renewables, Batteries and the Future Role of Gas

Renewable generation is growing rapidly in South Australia. This is posing two interrelated challenges: declining availability of fossil fuel plants and how to cope with the growing intermittency of power supply.

As renewable capacity grows, the economics of combined-cycle gas turbines (CCGT) is further challenged by declining utilisation and an increase in relative fixed costs.

By 2025, wind and solar – even after firming costs are included – will compete with CCGT capacity running at mid-merit/peaking. Meanwhile, a solar with battery combination will also start to compete with CCGT.
