PJM DER Demand Response Activity in 2017

by Elta Kolo, Ph.D.

In the past year PJM has made headway into addressing the implications of distributed energy resources (DERs) in its system, releasing two studies and endorsing a committee to examine issues and procedures in markets and protocols pertaining to DERs.

PJM’s efforts in addressing the challenges and opportunities for DERs in its system and markets will continue into 2018 as a result of internal efforts and guidance from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). By the end of the second quarter of 2018, the DER subcommittee is expected to deliver recommendations for revisions to PJM’s Manual or Tariff/Operating Agreement. PJM will also begin to apply guidelines set out by FERC in the February 15, 2018 ruling for the adoption and eligibility of energy storage participation in wholesale electricity markets goes into effect.
