In late July, Consolidated Edison held its first ever demand response auction -- aiming to shed more than 20 megawatts of load in a few specific outer-borough neighborhoods of New York City.

The results were a success for both auction winners and the utility. The auction is also a harbinger of a new way of doing business that is likely to spread far beyond Con Edison’s near-term timeline and even beyond the utility itself.
