Ottawa, ON-June 27 2012—Caribbean Utilities Company, Ltd. (CUC) has selected MeterSense and CustomerConnect—Harris Utilities’ meter data management and customer engagement solutions—to complete the deployment of its smart-grid infrastructure.

When the last of CUC’s 27,000 electricity meters are converted to the Sensus advanced metering infrastructure at the end of 2013, the public utility will leverage the capabilities of MeterSense and CustomerConnect to gather and analyze consumption data, and present new intelligence to its end users. CUC expects that the conversion will enable it not only to realize efficiencies across its own operations, but also encourage the customers it serves across Grand Cayman to become more conservation conscious.

“The cost to produce electricity is extremely high in the Caribbean,” said Sacha Tibbetts, CUC’s Manager Engineering & Customer Services. “As a utility, we want to ensure that our processes are as efficient as possible, and we want to help our customers understand their electricity usage and empower them to make informed decisions about consumption. MeterSense and CustomerConnect will help us meet these goals.”

MeterSense offers CUC a range of operational improvements. First, by automating meter reads and service orders, it will enable CUC personnel to serve customers more effectively. Second, its analytics functions will help administrators study power generation and consumption data in greater detail to inform operational decisions. And third, MeterSense’s capacity to identify and interpret power-outage and transformer-loading data will help CUC restore service quicker during unplanned interruptions.

While MeterSense supports a range of behind-the-scenes improvements at CUC, CustomerConnect will become a more visible manifestation of the utility’s smart-grid solution from an end-user’s point of view. Using the application, customers will be able to view their consumption histories, learn about their usage patterns and gather intelligence to more effectively participate in CUC’s Energy Smart conservation program.

Norm Daigle, executive vice-president of MeterSense, said that CUC’s smart grid implementation and the utility’s decision to adopt MeterSense and CustomerConnect—could signal the start of an important trend.

"CUC is an innovator among Caribbean utilities,” he said. “Their decision to fully implement a smart grid solution that features MeterSense and CustomerConnect will surely spark even more interest in such technology in this region. We are proud to partner with CUC and pleased to support such an important and highly visible implementation.”

Together, MeterSense and CustomerConnect provide advanced functionality and intuitive interfaces that help utilities such as CUC leverage the value of their smart grid data and engage their customers in key conservation programs.
