For a while, the Ford Focus reigned as one of the most sought-after cars in the now infamous Cash for Clunkers program. No more. The Toyota Corolla has taken over the top spot.

The latest figures from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which administers the program, showed that three Toyota models made the Top 10 list. The Prius came in at No. 4 while the Camry grabbed the No. 5 spot.

Honda's Civic and Fit also made the list.

Ford Focus fell to the No. 2 spot and is one of the only four American brand cars on the list.

Even though certain Japanese car models have proven popular, overall it is General Motors that has generated the most revenues under the program.

GM's vehicles accounted for 18.7 percent of the sales, followed by Toyota and Ford.

On the other hand, the top 10 models that have been ditched by consumers are all American brands. Ford Explorer and Ford F-150 took the top two spots, followed by the Jeep Grand Cherokee.

The federal government kicked off the Cash for Clunkers program only last week. It became so popular that the $1 billion that has been set aside is nearly gone.

The U.S. House of Representatives approved another $2 billion for the program. The Senate is set to vote on it as early as today. The version passed by the House would divert the money from the $6 billion loan guarantee program for renewable energy and electric grid projects.
