Reforming the Energy Vision

The conference program will largely follow the format of other highly successful GTM conferences, providing world-class content, speakers and moderators; valuable branding, exposure and thought-leadership; and unparalleled networking opportunities for attendees, stakeholders and all involved partners.

Specific topics and agenda items will follow current market issues surrounding NY REV, pivoting conversations to operationalizing much of the pilot and demonstration project work.

Speakers

Richard L. Kauffman

Chairman of Energy & Finance, New York State

Richard Kauffman joined the administration of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo as New York State’s first “energy czar” in February 2013. Mr. Kauffman oversees and manages New York State’s entire energy portfolio, including the New York State Department of Public Service, the New York Power Authority, the Long Island Power Authority, and the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA).

Prior to joining the administration, Mr. Kauffman worked in energy and finance at some of the nation’s highest levels, most recently serving as senior advisor to Secretary Steven Chu at the U.S. Department of Energy. In his private sector career, he was chief executive officer of Good Energies, Inc., a leading investor in clean energy technologies; a partner of Goldman Sachs where he chaired the Global Financing Group; and vice chairman of Morgan Stanley’s Institutional Securities Business and co-head of its Banking Department.

Mr. Kauffman is also chair of NYSERDA’s Board and has served as chairman of the Board of Levi Strauss & Co., and on the boards of several other organizations, including the Brookings Institution and the Wildlife Conservation Society. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. In 2014, Mr. Kauffman was named by Fortune Magazine as one of the World’s Top 25 Eco-Innovators.

Eleanor Stein

Expert, America's Power Plan & Former NY PSC Administrative Law Judge

Eleanor Stein served as an Administrative Law Judge at the New York State Public Service Commission from 1994-2014; until November 2015 she was Project Manager for the Commission’s Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) initiative for a more customer-centered, renewable, and distributed energy future. In 2015 she received a Master of Laws degree with distinction in climate change law and policy from the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow. She teaches Law of Climate Change: Domestic & Transnational at Albany Law School and the Power Dialog at the State University of New York. While at the NY PSC, she presided over or mediated the Renewable Portfolio Standard (2004), the Energy Efficiency Portfolio Standard (2007) and the Con Edison Resiliency Collaborative (2013-14). Her areas of interest include public policy dispute resolution, mobilizing public participation in energy matters, and climate justice. She is on the Board of EcoViva, a US-based project in solidarity with climate adaptation and sustainability in rural El Salvador. She is an expert with America’s Power Plan.

Daniel A. Zarrilli, PE

Chief Resilience Officer, Senior Director, Climate Policy & Programs, New York City Office of the Mayor

Daniel Zarrilli was appointed Senior Director of Climate Policy and Programs for the City of New York in January 2016 and is serving as New York City’s Chief Resilience Officer, overseeing the Mayor’s Office of Recovery and Resiliency, the Mayor’s Office of Sustainability, and the City’s OneNYC program. Prior to this, he was named the first Director of a new NYC Mayor’s Office of Recovery and Resiliency in March 2014, and had served as the Acting Director of the NYC Mayor’s Office of Long-Term Planning and Sustainability from February to December 2014. After Hurricane Sandy, he served on the Special Initiative for Rebuilding and Resiliency, a task force that developed an award-winning climate adaptation program for New York City.
Daniel was recently appointed by the NOAA Administrator to a 3-year term to the Sustained National Climate Assessment advisory board, is serving a 3-year term on FEMA’s National Advisory Council, and is advising the State of Louisiana on its 2017 Coastal Master Plan update. Previously, he was Senior Vice President for Asset Management at the New York City Economic Development Corporation and also spent five years with Bechtel Infrastructure Corporation. Daniel is a New York State Professional Engineer and holds an MS in Civil and Environmental Engineering from MIT and a BS in Civil Engineering from Lehigh University. He resides in Staten Island with his wife and three children.

Melody Agustin

Manager, Demand Response Operations, PG&E

Melody Agustin is the Manager of Demand Response (DR) Operations at Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E). Her team is responsible for day-to-day DR program operations, and for delivering the operational systems to support the evolving customer landscape and enable DR for California's future. Since joining PG&E, Melody was focused on demand side management strategy and implementation, including roles in DR portfolio management, Distributed Generation strategy, and Energy Efficiency emerging technologies. Prior to joining PG&E, she was a member of the Chief Technology Office of Applied Materials focused on semiconductor strategy and development. Melody has a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Materials from University of California, Santa Barbara, and a Bachelor of Science degree from Johns Hopkins University.

John Shipman

Department Manager, Demand Management & Customer Engagement, Con Edison

John Shipman heads up Con Edison’s Demand Management, Customer Engagement & Electric Vehicle Programs within the Distributed Resources Integration organization. His background includes time as Con Edison’s Chief Automotive Engineer, Department Manager of Secondary Systems Analysis and Manager of Gas Business Development. Mr. Shipman combines a Mechanical Engineering Degree with graduate work in Energy Management. In his current role, he is responsible for the Indian Point Demand Management Program, Commercial and Industrial energy efficiency programs, Small Business Direct Install programs, major account executives and electric vehicles.

Carlos Nouel

Vice President, New Energy Solutions, National Grid

Carlos Nouel is the Vice President of National Grid’s New Energy Solutions (NES) team. NES is an agile team focused on developing and launching innovative solutions and technologies that unlock value for National Grid’s customers and communities and accelerate progress towards a sustainable future.

Before becoming its leader, Carlos was the Director of Partnerships for the NES team. In that role, he was responsible for identifying customer’s energy needs and determining the most comprehensive, cost effective and sustainable strategies to fulfill those needs through the creation of innovative partnerships and alliances with key industry players. In addition, he also leads the development and execution of strategies and tactics for our smart grid programs. Before coming to New Energy Solutions, Carlos developed sourcing strategies to support all the requirements for National Grid’s energy efficiency portfolio valued at $400m per year.

Prior to joining National Grid, Carlos worked for companies such as Pfizer, British American Tobacco, IBM and AES in the supply chain area. Carlos holds an M.B.A. from Hult International Business School, and a B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Andres Bello Catholic University in Venezuela. He is also a Certified Energy Manager.

Marisa Uchin

Director, Regulatory Affairs & Market Development, Oracle | Opower

Marisa Uchin is Director, Regulatory Affairs and Market Development for Oracle | Opower where she is responsible for expanding markets for demand side resources, and shaping regulatory and legislative policy that advances utility investment in technology innovation. Marisa joined Oracle | Opower from Pacific Gas and Electric Company, where she held a variety of roles including Sr. Manager of Customer Energy Solutions and Manager of Federal Affairs where she led policy strategy on a broad set of issues including climate change, natural gas distribution and transmission, energy efficiency, renewables, and transportation electrification. Prior to joining the energy industry, Marisa held a variety of leadership and advisory roles in strategy, marketing and communications at companies including XM Satellite Radio, General Motors, and Fleishman Hillard. Marisa is a member of the Board of Directors for the Canadian Energy Efficiency Alliance and the Virginia Energy Efficiency Council. She is a graduate of Wesleyan University and holds an MBA from the Ross School of Business at the University of Michigan.

Mike Gordon

Founder & CEO, Joule Assets, Co-Chair, Sustainable Westchester

Named a Top 10 Energy Financier by New York Energy Week and Breaking Energy, Mike Gordon, CEO of Joule Assets, has pioneered the inauguration of Energy Reduction Asset markets and founded global companies at the intersection of energy and finance. Gordon has been an architect of new financing solutions for the energy efficiency marketplace, serving as counsel to U.S. and European governmental bodies and regulators including FERC, The European Commission and The United Nations’ Conference of Parties on Climate Change.

In 2000 Mike founded and sold (to Constellation Energy) the first firm in the US to create and monetize demand response assets, ConsumerPowerline. In just 3 years, Gordon was managing more than 1GW, achieving 30 percent returns and paying participating customers $100M annually. The model that Mike created there was emulated a few years later by EnerNOC and Comverge and let to Mike being a recipient of the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

After selling CPower, Mike co-founded Joule Assets in 2012 with the goal of delivering new financing solutions for the underserved small-to-midsized energy efficiency markets and forging a channel that turns those markets into an investment opportunity for qualified investors. Gordon is a regular speaker at leading energy and sustainability conferences throughout the United States and the world. In 2015, Mike was elected as a Co-Chair for Sustainable Westchester’s Board of Directors. Under his leadership, Mike helped usher in New York State’s first community choice aggregation program, which is helping the state meet the goals set out in Governor Cuomo’s Reforming Energy Vision.

Gordon holds a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard's Kennedy School, a and Masters in Business Administration from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
