  • James Sweeney

    Director Precourt Institute for Energy Efficiency,

    James (Jim) Sweeney, is Director of the Precourt Institute for Energy Efficiency; Professor of Management Science and Engineering; Senior Fellow of the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research; Senior Fellow of the Hoover Institution on War, Revolution and Peace; and Senior Fellow of the Stanford Institute for International Studies. His professional activities focus on economic policy and analysis, particularly in energy, natural resources, and the environment.

    At Stanford he has served as chairman of the Department of Engineering-Economic Systems, chairman of the Department of Engineering-Economic Systems and Operations Research, Director of the Energy Modeling Forum, Chairman of the Institute for Energy Studies, and Director of the Center for Economic Policy Research (now the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research). In the early 1970's he was Director of the Office of Energy Systems Modeling and Forecasting of the U.S. Federal Energy Administration. He was a founding member of the International Association for Energy Economics, co-editor of the Journal Resource and Energy Economics, and vice-president for publications of the International Association for Energy Economics. He is a Senior Fellow of the U.S. Association for Energy Economics and a Fellow of the California Council on Science and Technology. He is on the National Advisory Council of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory and a member of Governor Schwarzenegger's Council of Economic Advisors.

    He holds a B.S. degree from MIT in Electrical Engineering and a Ph.D. from Stanford University in Engineering-Economic Systems.

  • Marc Porat

    Chairman, Serious Materials, CalStar Products and ZETA Communities

    Marc has led pioneering technology and materials companies for 25 years, first in the information sector and now in energy efficiency. Seven years ago he moved into cleantech with a vision to radically reduce energy consumption in the built environment and attack climate change. He has created a group of venture-backed green manufacturing companies to reinvent traditional building materials and transform building design and construction and is currently chairman of Serious Materials, Zeta Communities and Cal-Star Products.

    After completing his doctorate, the Information Economy, at Stanford in 1976, he served as Senior Economist at U.S. Department of Commerce and then Director of the Aspen Institute. At the Aspen Institute, he produced and hosted a PBS documentary, "The Information Society". In 1983, he founded Private Satellite Network, a DBS pioneer that built and operated television and data networks for Fortune 500 companies. (sold). In 1988, Marc joined Apple Computer and led a project that developed a smart personal communicator. Apple spun out the project as General Magic, building communication hardware and software for PDAs and intelligent agents. Marc was Chairman & CEO (IPO 1995). In 1998, Marc founded Perfect Commerce and served as its Chairman. The web-based enterprise software company provides CRM, sourcing, procurement software and supply chain optimization (merged). He is a supporting member of Natural Resource Defense Council, Environmental Defense Fund, U.S. Green Building Council, China-U.S. Energy Efficiency Alliance, Environmental Entrepreneurs, Rocky Mountain Institute, JUCCCE and Global Green.

  • Dan Geiger

    Executive Director, U.S. Green Building Council, Northern California Chapter (USGBC-NCC)

    Dan Geiger is the Executive Director of U.S. Green Building Council – Northern California Chapter (USGBC-NCC). USGBC-NCC is one of the largest and most innovative USGBC Chapters in the United States, and a national leader in LEED certification, training and policy advocacy. The Chapter encompasses the San Francisco Bay Area and Branches in Monterey, Silicon Valley and Sacramento.

    Mr. Geiger, in cooperation with the Board and volunteer Committees, manages and oversees Chapter strategy, growth, programs, and operations. Starting as the first full-time employee he has built a professional staff which serves more than 1,500 members in Northern California.

    He is a highly experienced social entrepreneur with more than 25 years of start-up, executive and business planning, strategy and organizational development consulting experience spanning the nonprofit, for-profit and philanthropy sectors. Recent executive experience includes: the Executive Director of Groundspring.org. He was the Co-Founder and CEO of OpNet Community Ventures, which prepared and supported low-income young adults for entry and career development in the internet industry. His achievements at OpNet were recognized by former Vice President Al Gore at a campaign event during the 2000 Presidential election.

    Mr. Geiger has served on many Boards of Directors, and has been profiled or featured in media such as Good Morning America, Wall Street Journal, Business 2.0, USA Today, San Francisco Chronicle, San Jose Mercury News and many others.

    His business experience includes Marketing Manager and Account Executive for Wang Laboratories, Inc. Mr. Geiger holds an MBA from the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley.

  • Pat Bailey, PE

    Product Manager, Sustainable Design Autodesk

    Pat is a product manager at Autodesk, focusing on sustainable design tools for Autodesk’s Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) division.  He is a licensed Mechanical Engineer and  has worked for approximately 15 years on issues related to energy and resource efficiency in the built environment.  Prior to working at Autodesk, Pat was one of the co-founders of Green Building Studio which was acquired by Autodesk in 2008.  Mr. Bailey is past president of the Redwood Empire Section of ASHRAE, a founding member of Minnesotans for an Energy Efficient Economy and served for two years as a Peace Corps science teacher in Botswana, Africa.  A very long time ago, he earned a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Minnesota.

  • Josh Becker

    General Partner and Co-Founder, New Cycle Capital

    Josh Becker started his career in the Clean Energy area in 1991. From Williams College he went to work for ICF-Kaiser International, a DC-based environmental consulting and engineering firm. There he helped launch the first Clean Air Marketplace conference back in 1992 and consulted on energy strategy for companies like General Electric.

    After working on Capitol Hill as a Press Secretary for a Congresswoman on the Energy and Commerce Committee, he started his first Internet company in 1994 when he co-founded IntraACTIVE a pioneering groupware company. He was also one of the first employees at EarthWeb Inc, which went public in 1998. After joint degrees from the Stanford Graduate School of Business and Stanford Law School, Becker joined Brentwood Venture Capital and then joined Brentwood's technology partners in 1999 in founding Redpoint Ventures (www.Redpoint.com). At Redpoint he brought in investments like BigBand Networks (NASDAQ:BBND) and served as a board observer for BigBand, Esurance, and ViaFone.

  • Jack Bolick

    CEO Adura Technologies

    Former president, Honeywell Process Solutions, growing that business from $1.5 billion to $3 billion in annual revenues over a six-year period.

  • Michael Butler

    Chairman and CEO, Cascadia Capital

    The co-founder of Cascadia Capital, Michael Butler leads the firm and is an emerging thought leader in the New Energy Economy. His recent focus on sustainable technology has helped propel Cascadia into some of the most important transactions in this market.

    Prior to co-founding Cascadia Capital, Butler served as a Managing Director at Lehman Brothers responsible for global equity sales and equity syndicate. He also served on the firm's Equity Commitment Committee, Equity Syndicate Committee and Private Equity Commitment Committee. Before joining Lehman Brothers, Butler was a Principal with Morgan Stanley & Company, where he was responsible for divisional global product and risk management and was a member of the division's Operating Committee. He has been involved in numerous equity financing transactions for both public and private companies.

    Butler holds a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Washington and an M.B.A. in International Finance from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania

  • Paul Ciandrini

    President and CEO, HydroPoint

    Paul Ciandrini took the helm as president and chief executive officer of HydroPoint in 2008. In this role, he is responsible for day-to-day operations and the strategic development of the company's water-saving WeatherTRAK technology. He is a member of the Company's board of directors.

    Mr. Ciandrini came to HydroPoint from BearingPoint, Inc. (formerly KPMG Consulting), where he held the position of chief risk officer. Prior to that, as president of Plumtree Software, Inc., Mr. Ciandrini contributed to increasing the company's value by more than 80 percent facilitating the company's acquisition by BEA Systems, Inc. In his previous role as senior vice president of North American application sales for Oracle Corporation, Mr. Ciandrini oversaw annual revenue growth of 43 percent. Before joining Oracle, Mr. Ciandrini managed the high technology practice at BearingPoint and later serving as group executive vice president for product services consulting, a $700 million annual revenue business. Earlier in his career, Mr. Ciandrini served as vice president of marketing for Walker Interactive Systems and helped take the firm through its initial public offering. Mr. Ciandrini holds a BS in Environmental Sciences and an MBA from Rutgers University.

  • Sam Gabbita

    Principal, Element Partners

    Sam joined Element in 2006. He has experience in private equity and investment banking, with a focus on industrial, energy, and telecommunications companies.

    Prior to joining Element, Sam worked as an Associate at Lazard Freres focused on financial restructuring of companies in the energy, transportation, cable and automotive industries. He also spent three years as an Associate with Nautic Partners, a private equity firm, where he focused on growth, buyout and venture investments in the telecommunications and information technology sectors. Sam also worked as a Financial Analyst in Investment Banking for Salomon Brothers.

    Sam serves on the board of directors of: Wasatch Wind, Inc. and Apex Construction Systems, and is an observer for Element on the boards of BioFuelBox, and Fat Spaniel Technologies. Sam earned his BA in Economics, Magna Cum Laude, from the University of California at Los Angeles, and a Masters degree in Business Administration from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.

  • Matt Golden

    Founder and Chief Building Scientist, Recurve

    Matt Golden is the co-founder and president of Recurve. Prior to founding the company in 2004, Matt worked as an Energy Consultant, helping homeowners and businesses develop solar power systems. He soon realized that he was offering only a point solution and was not truly addressing most homeowners' desires to make their homes and lives more sustainable. Matt developed the concept for Recurve to meet this market demand by providing a single, full-service resource and a brand homeowners can trust to help them improve the comfort, health, and efficiency of their home.

    Matt was recently recognized by the Building Performance Institute as the first ever recipient of the Tony Woods Award for Excellence in Advancing the Home Performance Industry. He speaks extensively on building science and integrated green design to groups such as the AIA (American Institute of Architects), West Coast Green, Build It Green, and others. He is author of a number of articles for Home Energy Magazine and has been featured in the San Francisco Chronicle, USA Today, Forbes, New York Times, and the Ellen Degeneres Show. Matt currently resides on the following boards: Department of Energy (DOE) Home Performance Council, Building Performance Institute (BPI), California Building Performance Contractors Association (CBPCA), Build It Green, and, Fine Home Building Magazine Green Building Advisory Board, and Efficiency First.

    Matt holds a bachelors degree in foreign relations from Georgetown University.

  • Patrick Govang

    President, Co-Founder, e2e Materials

    Patrick J. Govang is president and co-founder of e2e Materials, LLC, an award-winning clean technology start-up company in Ithaca, New York that produces petroleum-free, biodegradable composites that are stronger, lighter, and cheaper than composites filling landfills today.

    Prior to founding e2e, Patrick was a director of the Cornell Center for Materials Research (CCMR), leading a team that leveraged more than $80M in annual materials research funding to develop research collaborations with large corporations, support New York State small businesses through an innovative outreach model, and foster start-up companies.

    With more than 20 years of leadership experience in product development, purchasing, and quality/manufacturing management for the automotive industry, Patrick has also worked with Deloitte Consulting and New York's Alliance for Manufacturing and Technology as a lead consultant in corporate strategic planning, lean manufacturing, and Chapter 11 turnarounds. In 1999, he founded ProjectPoint.com, a start-up company focused on collaborative project management in the automotive industry.

  • Barbara Heydorn

    Director, Center of Excellence in Energy SRI International

    Barbara Heydorn leads SRI's Center of Excellence in Energy. In that role, she directs SRI's business development opportunities in the energy arena, shaping the strategy that links SRI's R&D capabilities to market needs. SRI's Center of Excellence in Energy enables multidisciplinary efforts to address important energy problems, from developing alternative energy sources to using conventional resources in a more sustainable manner.

    Previously, Heydorn was part of SRI Consulting Business Intelligence, where she tracked developments in fuel cells for the Explorer program. Explorer analyzes commercial opportunities arising from technology developments and evaluates them along six commercialization vectors.

    While at SRI Consulting, she conducted single-client studies and was an active contributor to several chemical marketing-research programs, including the Chemical Economics Handbook Program, the Specialty Chemicals Update Program, and China Report: Chemical Product Trends.

    In addition, Heydorn's past experience includes conducting market research and competitive-analysis studies and in formulating competitive strategy. She has lead teams to conduct technical due diligence, strategic studies for companies considering entering new business areas, and scenarios to help companies plan their technology strategies. Analyses have included industry structure and market dynamics, market share, competitor profiles, technology sourcing, and quantification of the existing market and growth opportunities.

    Heydorn received her M.B.A. from Santa Clara University, with a concentration in quantitative approaches to business problems, and holds a B.S. in chemistry from the University of Redlands.

  • Bruce King

    Cleantech Advisor, Foundation Capital, Serious Materials and Green Building Advisor

    Mr. King is a cleantech advisor to Foundation Capital, Serious Materials, and Green Building Advisor, and sits on the board of an early stage building materials company in San Luis Obispo. Mr. King is a registered engineer with a 30 year old private structural consulting practice, and 25 years of leadership in the global green building movement. He has given green building lectures and talks at universities around the world, and at the invitation of Prince Charles' Foundation for the Built Environment in London. Mr. King has been featured on public radio in the U.K. and U.S., and print publications such as the Los Angeles Times, USA Today, and The Wall Street Journal. He is also the founder and CEO of the Green Building Press. Mr. King is also the Founder and Director of the Ecological Building Network (EBNet), a non-profit information resource based in San Rafael, California.

  • James Lee

    CEO, Cimetrics

    Mr. Lee is the founder of Cimetrics and has acted as its CEO since its formation. Mr. Lee has been a leader in the embedded control networking and building automation community for over 15 years. As founder and former President of the BACnet Manufacturers Association, the leading open systems networking consortium in the building automation industry, Mr. Lee's aggressive promotion of the BACnet open protocol standard has helped make Cimetrics a high-profile player in the arena. Mr. Lee has a B.A. in Physics from Cornell University.

  • Peter Le Lievre

    CEO Chromasun Inc.

    Peter Le Lievre is a global leader in concentrating solar power plants and equipment. He is presently CEO of Chromasun Inc and was previously co-founder and CEO of Ausra Inc. He was responsible for the development and/or construction of Australia's largest solar thermal plant, Germany's largest high temperature solar facility and a US 175MW CSP plant now before the California Energy Commission. Peter holds 13 patents and has co-published 10 peer reviewed papers on utility scale solar power.

  • Mark Miller

    CEO, Project Frog

    The company specializes in modular, zero-energy buildings. Last year, it unveiled a “School of the Future” that used 75 percent less power than the conventional schools, obtained the rest of its power from green sources, and was made from recyclable materials. At least two schools will unfurl Project Frog buildings this year.

  • Lynn Olechnowicz

    Senior Associate, Perkins+Will San Francisco

    Lynn is a Senior Associate at Perkins+Will San Francisco and is an architect with 29 years experience in all aspects of project delivery. She is the San Francisco team leader for Perkins+Will's National Sustainable Design Initiative and co-chaired AIA San Francisco's Committee on the Environment (COTE) 2006-2008. Currently she is the project manager for the Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise (CREATE) in Singapore, and the Mayer Hall Renovation and Addition at UC San Diego. Lynn graduated from Ball State University, Indiana with a Bachelor of Architecture, and B.S. Environmental Design; she is a LEED Accredited Professional.

  • Noel Park

    President and CEO, Lumiette

    Formerly a senior vice president at Samsung and Nanostellar, Mr. Park runs Lumiette, a Silicon Valley startup that will bring a light it calls the Flat Panel Lamp, or FPL, to market. The FPL consumes 75 percent less power than an incandescent bulb and lasts five times as a compact florescent bulb. FPLs also only measure around four millimeters thick.

  • David Rosenberg

    CEO, Hycrete

    David founded what is now Hycrete, Inc. in 2002, when he joined his family's specialty chemical company. His family has been involved in inventing and manufacturing novel specialty chemicals for over 35 years. David spun Hycrete, Inc. off from his family's business in 2005 with a government grant and capital from a private equity firm. David still works closely with his family in both research and development and manufacturing. David is a leader in sustainable construction. He was an active participant of the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland. There he facilitated a discussion on sustainability and design and participated in the Governors Meeting on Engineering and Construction. At the World Economic Forum's regional meeting in Egypt, David moderated a panel discussion on Greening Our Cities. In 2008, David was the moderator of a panel discussion for US Senator Cantwell's think tank on adoption and investment in cleantech. In 2008, David also spoke at Fortune's Brainstorm Green event. He was also a panelist in a discussion of green construction at the 2008 Cleantech Conference in San Francisco.

  • Kevin Surace

    President and CEO, Serious Materials

    Mr. Surace, a noted speaker and writer on climate change and the built environment, is on a mission to significantly reduce the use of fossil fuels and their effect on the environment. As CEO of Serious Materials, Kevin leads the company in its mission to reduce energy usage and CO2 generation of the world's largest contributor, our buildings. By developing new materials and processes that require little energy to manufacture, and advanced products which dramatically improve the insulation and comfort of homes and offices, a worst-case climate and energy catastrophe can be avoided.

    Before joining Serious Materials in 2002, Mr. Surace held executive and technical positions with Perfect Commerce, General Magic, Air Communications, National Semiconductor, and Seiko-Epson. He received his degree in electrical engineering technology from Rochester Institute of Technology where he currently serves on the Board of Trustees, and has been awarded multiple patents. Mr. Surace also serves on the boards of FreeLight, Array Converter, Zeta Communities, and Integrity Block; chairs the Sunnyvale Mayoral Green Ribbon Committee; and co-chaired the CCTO Building Materials contest.

  • Trevor Stout

    CEO, Integrity Block

    Trevor Stout co-founded Integrity Block in 2007, and serves as its CEO and Chairman. Trevor brings years of leadership, industry-first product introduction, and executive management experience to the team. Trevor is a passionate visionary dedicated to addressing climate change through the development and delivery of sustainable building materials.

    Trevor has held numerous roles as Founder & CEO, and has raised $35 million dollars for venture-backed startups, such as: Jacent Technologies, a speech recognition call management company later sold to YUM! Brands (NYSE:YUM); iCommerce, a pioneer in developing e-commerce solutions deployed by thousands of companies, including industry leaders such as EarthLink, HP, and Sprint; and Internet Business Solutions (IBS), acquired by EDNet, Inc. in 1996.

    Trevor got his start as a Project Manager at IBM where he pioneered the development of IBM's Web site and IBMLink, IBM's Web system for customer support and sales information. Trevor holds a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science and engineering from UCLA, from which he graduated with Magna Cum Laude honors.

  • Patrick Von Bargen

    Quinn Gillespie & Associates

    Patrick Von Bargen joined Quinn Gillespie & Associates in October of 2008 and provides senior leadership on client issues and political activities. Patrick's particular focus is on green technology and energy independence issues.

    Patrick joins QGA after having served in major public policy roles over 17 years in Washington, including as Chief of Staff to Senator Jeff Bingaman (D-NM) from 1987 to 1999 and Managing Executive for Policy & Staff for Chairman William H. Donaldson (R-NY) at the Securities & Exchange Commission from 2003 to 2005. He also headed the National Commission on Entrepreneurship and served as Vice President of the Council on Competitiveness, the only national organization whose membership is comprised exclusively of CEOs, university presidents, and labor leaders focused on American economic competitiveness issues.

    Patrick's private sector career has given him extraordinary insights into the innovation economy. He had a distinguished career in law representing start-up technology companies and venture capital firms and then served three years as CEO of the Center for Venture Education's Kauffman Fellows Program in Silicon Valley – the premier education and networking institute for new junior and senior venture capitalists around the world.

    A native of Los Angeles, California, Mr. Von Bargen earned a B.A. in History with Honors in Humanities, graduating summa cum laude from Stanford University, a J.D. from Stanford Law School, and an MBA from the Yale School of Management. He is a member of the bar in the states of California and Colorado.

  • Phil Williams, PE, LEED AP

    Vice President of Technical Systems and Sustainability, Webcor

    Phil Williams' career focus has been in the California marketplace with extensive experience in the design, application, sales, installation and service of HVAC, plumbing, electrical, fire protection, data and related systems.

    Most recently he served as the Chairman of the San Francisco Mayor's Task Force on Green Buildings which focused on recommendations for private sector green building requirements. These aggressive standards; planned for implementation in 2008, cover virtually all private sector commercial and residential building types with phased escalations to enable industry implementation. In addition he serves on the Advisory for the Business Council on Climate Change (BC3), the San Francisco Building Code Advisory Committee (including Code Advisory Green Building Subcommittee), Chair of the Industry Advisory Board for the Center for the Built Environment (CBE) and California's Green Technologies Advisory Board.

    Sustainable projects of note include the California Academy of Science (LEED Platinum), Letterman Digital Art Center (LEED Gold), Symantec (LEED Gold), Century/Avenue of the Stars (LEED Silver), Grand Ave (LEED Silver) and LA Live (LEED Certified). He received his registration as a California Professional Mechanical Engineer in 1985 and is a LEED Accredited Professional. Currently, Phil is heading up over 20 million square feet and over $5 billion of LEED Projects, which ranked Webcor Builders as the #2 Green Contractor in the country by ENR Magazine (2007 revenue).

    Webcor Builders, based in San Mateo CA. with offices in San Francisco, Hayward, Los Angeles, Anaheim and San Diego, was recognized in 2006 and 2007 as the largest commercial builder in California and is consistently ranked in the top 40 general contractors in the nation.

  • Michael Kanellos

    Editor in Chief, Greentech Media

    Michael Kanellos covers emerging technologies and companies in the green world. Prior to joining the company in 2008, he worked for CNET Network's News.com for eleven years. Among other jobs at CNET, he launched the company's push into clean technology. He has appeared on NPR, CBS, CNBC, Fox News and other media outlets and has spoken at CES, the Japan Business Strategy Summit, Ceatec, the Irish Software Association, Stanford, U.C. Berkeley, the Flash Memory Summit and Clean Energy Venture Summit. A graduate of Cornell University and the University of California (Hastings), he has worked as an attorney, a travel writer and a busboy at a pancake house.

  • Scott Clavenna

    CEO, Greentech Media

    Scott Clavenna has been leading high-tech market research firms for over 15 years. In his capacity as a trusted analyst and consultant, Scott has helped dozens of companies enter and succeed in complex and intensely competitive markets worldwide. He also has authored more than 30 reports that helped define important emerging market segments in optical and broadband communications.

    Prior to founding Greentech Media, Scott was chief analyst at Heavy Reading, the market research arm of Light Reading, the dominant online media company in the telecommunications market. CMP bought Light Reading in 2005. Before creating Heavy Reading, Scott founded PointEast Research, providing strategic consulting and market intelligence to a broad mix of startups, venture capitalists and major suppliers in the communications/IT industry, and worked as director of research for Light Reading. In 1997, Scott co-founded Pioneer Consulting, which quickly grew into the leading market research firm covering the optical and broadband communications industry.
