Tesla IPO, Whatever.  Ferrari to Show its Hybrid.

An improvement in mileage for cash-strapped Ferrari owners

Michael Kanellos reported in detail on the Tesla IPO filing within minutes of the announcement on Friday afternoon.  He dissects the SEC S-1 document in this article.

But, let's be serious.

The real news in electric vehicles last week was the official unveiling of the hybrid version of the Ferrari 599 GTB Fiorano (as reported by All Cars Electric).  The '599' in the model name refers to the 620 horsepower 5.99 liter V-12 engine, now augmented by an electric motor, a lithium-ion battery pack and a flywheel-powered Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS).

The hybrid development was spurred by the cry of cash-strapped Ferrari owners trying to get a few more miles per gallon.  And this Ferrari delivers -- with 11.75 miles per gallon, up from the usual 8.7 miles per gallon.  The masters of Maranello strike again.

While the Tesla's Lotus Elise-inspired body might raise your heart rate a bit, nothing induces tumescence like the Ferrari.

The new model will make its debut at the March 2010 Geneva Auto Show.

Such a pity that it was Ferrari that killed KERS in F1 and therefore any new generation development of energy recovery systems.
I suppose it keeps the oil companies happy.
Pandering to the green image is total hypocrisy for Ferrari 13 mpg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! come on full EV performance cars are almost equaling Ferrari performance and with ZERO mpg.
Such thinking in vehicle design is out dated history.

Ferrari is going to be a dying company like “C”.  When E cars can beat out a 600-900Hp car on Electric motors, only the Engine sound keeps them returning to Ferrari.

I love Ferraris, but this car is a joke. They should remain pure to the purpose, wonderful weekend joyrides. THe numbers of these cars will make no impact on peak oil, what Nissan and Tesla are doing are important, what Ferrari does has no impact either way. It is sort of like being upset that a supermodel is not vegetarian, who cares?

I’m as big an EV fan as anyone, but autogyro and cash4acres are oblivious to the Ferrari market.  No EV can come close to the performance of a supercar.  While the instantaneous numbers look alright, if you drive a Tesla with any spirit, the range drops to a lap or two of any track.  Not that it justifies 8.7 mpg, but that is the purpose of a Ferrari; to go very fast. very well.  So unless you’ve got interchangeable battery packs, an EV is of no use in that arena.

I believe you meant to say “infinity” mpg (Miles per Gallon).

Anon, you realy are way out of touch with EV technology.
On the 13th of January I attended the 4th European Cleaner Racing Conference.
There are now a large number of cars and bikes that can equal ic engined vehicle performance including full race versions and organized events increasing at a revolutionary rate.
The Ferrari hybrid is a joke aimed at maintaining the status quo for the benefit of the oil and big car manufacturers. They have not woken up yet but for ic engines the time is now definitely limited.
I give it around 18 Months before the delusion being fed to the public by vested interest begins to fade away.

I’ll see you back here in 18 months, autogyro, where you can get back in your pulpit if massive change has occured.  Not gonna happen.  I don’t think I’m out of touch at all.  Batteries are a massive limitation of EV, no matter what your budget.  There’s no way an EV could be competitive in an endurance racing event without interchangeable batteries.  If you saw some shiny prototypes that said otherwise, they are hiding the numbers.
