Photovoltaic technology: Technology that converts sunlight into electricity, usually using solar panels that contain silicon. With today's worldwide shortage of solar-grade silicon, some new photovoltaic (PV) technologies are using other materials, such as thin cadmium-telluride or copper-indium-gallium-selenide films (see Talk the Talk: Thin Film).
